Habida reveals the real reason why secular industry is experiencing shortage of female artists
There are only a handful of female musicians in secular industry. Habida Maloney attributes the shortage of female secular musicians to industry stakeholders.
In the past few years several female secular musicians including heavyweights like Wahu, Amani and Size 8 gave their lives to Christ and started singing gospel songs.
No other new female musicians have stepped up to ‘replace’ the many female musicians who crossed over to gospel industry.
Poor pay
Habida attributes the shortage of female secular musicians to poor pay. The songbirds says industry prayers discourage female secular musicians by not giving them enough airplay and also by not matching their pay with male counterparts.
“It is quite unfortunate that women in the music industry are still not yet taken seriously. Most of the time we end being paid less than what male singers earn. As musicians, we also struggle. Making a good track is expensive and people are not paying for shows. Our songs are not getting played over and over. There are many issues that need to be fixed,” said Habida.
